TPO-46 Integrated essay

In this set of materials, the reading claims that electronic medical records of patients have several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping. However, in the lecture, the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and refuses every of the reason given in the reading. She does not feel that the electronic medical records are as beneficial as the author assumes.

First of all, it it clearly stated in the reading that electronic medical record keeping will result in reduced costs. However, the professor disagrees with this idea. She explains from another angle that they probably not be saving any money related to paper records. They keep the paper records as emergency back up so still have to pay for the storage cost. Considering these aspects, it will neither benefit it terms of cost nor in terms of space.

Secondly, the author states that it will be very helpful for doctors to easily access the medical records and thus it will also reduce the chances of medical errors. The professor challenges the validity of this assertion. She suggests that they still can not eliminate the poor handwriting of the doctors as they have to use pen and papers while examing the patient. Later they will feed that data into the computer and the person who is feeding the data into the computer have to predict what is written.

Finally, the author mentions that it reduces chances of human errors. The professor,on the other hand, sates that access to all the records information is under the strict privacy rules in USA. So it is not easy to recollect data and such information can not be provided easily to anyone.
