In the reading, the author claims that an ancient kind of winged reptiles ,Pterosaurs, had not a capability of powered flight by providing three reasons of support. On the other hand, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer casts doubt on each of the author's reasons and presents some evidence to the contrary.
First, the author argues that the powered flight needs a lot of energy but Pterosaurs were cold-blooded animals and their body had a low metabolism that could not produce enough energy for flight. Conversely, the lecturer asserts that according to evidence which is reported from the fossils of these animals, Pterosaurs had a dense hair like covering. that was analogous to fur covering on the warm-blooded animals that utilize it for keeping the body temperature in the cold climate. As it turns out, these characteristics of the Pterosaurs' body could supply enough energy for them to flight.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that Pterosaurs were not able to fly due to their heavy weight. However, the lecturer mentions that Pterosaurs had a specific anatomic feature that caused them to have a low weight. Their bones were hollow instead of solid so as to keep their weight low. Therefore, it figures out, their body had an appropriate weight that allowed them to fly.
Finally, the author states that unlike birds, large Pterosaurs did not have strong leg muscles to let them run and jump quickly in order to prepare for flying. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this point by explaining some different characteristics between birds and Pterosaurs. She posits that birds walk on their two limbs and get ready to push up. However, Pterosaurs walk on their four limbs such as a modern bat. As a result, they have used all of their four limbs for flying without experiencing any difficulty.
