The reading specifies that there are three answers explain how the humpback whale navigate. However, the professor explains that this points are unconvincing and provides some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the humpback whales are intelligent and they have a complex brain. Also, they have a abstract system of sensory such as the night sky orientation. Hence, wales use sky to navigate. Conversely, the professor opposes the idea by saying that there are no connection between orientation and cognitive ability. Ducks also have an average cognitive and they do not use stars for orientation. Since, they are born they have this ability which is instinct. Therefore, whale which have this feature do not use star for navigation.
Second, the author stated that humpback migrate in a straight lines for long distance. Therefore, they should use some external object or force and since they cannot rely on land features, they rely on stars at night. Nevertheless, the lecturer asserts that whale are sensitive to earth magnative. Thus, it is possible that they use earth for navigation instead if sky.
Third, whales exhibit an unusual behavior known as spy-hooping. They floating straight up for minutes at a time and in that time their heads are looking upward and looking to stars for navigation. In contrast, the professor contradicts this point reasoning that sharks have this behavior but they do not look at sky or migrate to other places. Therefore, they do not use it for navigation and it is not prove the point whale look to sky.
