The lecturer and the reading passage offer three opposing views on whether humpback whales use the stars to navigate their migration path or not. While there are some reasons stated in the reading passage which support this theory, the lecturer casts some doubts on this theory.
First, the lecturer states that there is no real connection between intelligence and navigation abilities. While it is mentioned in the reading passage that whales are very intelligent and they use their well-developed cognitive ability to navigate their routes, the lecturer says that there are some other animals which their cognitive abilities are average and they can also navigate the path. So, the lecturer does not find any relation between cognitive abilities and navigation system in whales and other animals.
Next, the lecturer claims that animals detect external objects and obstacles using the earth magnetic field to navigate their path. Although it is mentioned in the reading passage that humpback whales may rely on stars at night to provide them with signals to keep their direction, the lecturer states that because humpback whales have the biomagnetic ability like other animals, they would also use earth magnetic field instead of stars to navigate their path.
Finally, the lecturer asserts that they are also other animals which look upward. He states that sharks utilize this method in order to find the animal they want to hunt. While it is stated in the reading passage that humpback whales exert this method to look at the sun and figure out some information to navigate their routes, the lecturer claims that humpback whales do spy-hopping even during the days that stars are not appeared in the sky. Hence, he thinks that humpback whales do this work for other reasons.
