The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about the validity of using stars to navigate migration route by humpback whales. The reading states three evidences that prove whales utilize stars to find their way to migrate long distances. Although the lecturer finds the theory of star-using-navigation plausible, he finds the reasons unreasonable and provides three counter ideas to refute them all.

First of all, the reading states that whales posses high level of cognitive ability which makes them use the sensory stimuli such as star navigation. However, the lecturer explains that there are some other animals including birds which take advatages of stars for navigation. For example, ducks utilize stars to find their route to navigate, however, they lack adequate intelligent. Thus, there is no connection between the level of smartness and the ability to uses stars to migrate.

Furthermore, the author claims that since the whales swim in a stright line, they must have used some external clues such as stars to keep their line direct. The lecturer, on the other hand, mentions that animals which travel in a stright line usually exert some external objects or forces to assist them to be in direct way. For instance, some species find out their ways by means of Earth magnetic field. Also, it has been proved that there is a substance in some animals' brain called "Biomagnetat". This chemical material makes animals so sensitive about magnetic field. Thus, the idea of using stars is not reasonable due to the fact stright-line travel takes place by the means of external signs such as magnetic field, not stars.

Eventually, the reading asserts that spy-hopping behavior which allows whales to look for stars by putting head above the water level. In contrast, according to the lecturer, while the spy-hopping is a scarce behavior in many animals, it is typical of some others such as sharks which do not migrate. They do this task to hunt other surrounding animals. In addition, they are seen doing this habit during days when there is no sign of stars to navigate. Both of these reasons reject the spy-hopping behavior.
