TPO 49- Integrated essay

Author and lecture talks about unique characteristics of hump back whale that is migrating to far distance to search for food and mate. Reading implies that whale navigates through stars location to reach destination. While, lecture states that there are no enough proofs to convince that.

Firstly, reading points out that whales have high intellectual capability and well developed sensory system to locate stars at night. Lecture refutes this argument. He states whales lack that ability to navigate through stars. In addition, he provides an example of ducks that follow this method of predicting direction from stars. As a consequence, he disagrees by explaining whale do not possess high cognitive function.

Secondly, author compares humpback whales with birds and animals because they both travel in straight lines they use specific landmark to judge the distance in straight lines. He also points out that humpback whales take help of stars to orient themselves to appropriate. On the other hand, lecture denies this by saying whales can maintain these straight lines due to strong external magnetic force. As they contain bio-magnetite in their body, which attracts with the magnetic field of earth and they re-orient them to straight line.

Third, author emphasize on spy-hopping personality trait; that is swimming with head above the ocean to keep track of stars. However, professor cast doubt on this. He sates that indeed whale do show this is less feature of spy hopping. But this doesn’t prove the point made in reading, because they usually do that during daytime. In addition, this behavior is also seen in sharks on contrary they are not long distance swimmers. So, it is worth saying that hump back whale do not rely on stars for migration.
