The reading states that the ability of humpback whales migrate long distances is due to its use of navigable stars. However, the lecturer refutes this statement by stating that the proposed evidence is not very convincing.
First, the reading states that humpback whales seem to be quite intelligent to use the stars for navigation. This is due to the complexity of its brain which far outweighs that of other animals. The lecturer counters this point by stating that there is no real connection between intelligence and animals’ ability to use star for navigation. Furthermore, he mentioned that other animals such as ducks with an average cognitive ability and an inherent instinct enables them to migrate distances and not necessarily because of their intelligence. Therefore, the idea of humpback whale’s intelligibility in using stars for navigation does not seem to be connected.
Second, the ability of the whales to migrate in straight lines. The reading posits that whales could migrate in straight lines only when they depend on the stars to provide them with the external signs by which to maintain direction over long distances. On the contrary, the lecturer repudiates the idea by saying that the whale possesses a substance in the brain known as bio magnetite which makes it sensitive to the earth’s magnetic field. The fact there are bio magnetite in the brain suggests that they orient themselves towards to magnetic field rather than the stars during migration.
Third, the reading states that humpback whale exhibits a rare behavior known as spy-hopping. Spy hopping is when whales look up to stars to provide information on its navigation. In contrast to the reading, the lecturer claims that some other animals exhibit this unusual behavior. For example, he mentioned that although sharks display this behavior, it is not necessary to aid for their navigation. Rather, sharks spy for hunting purposes. The idea of whale spy hopping to look at star for navigation is pure speculation.
