The reading passage proposes that humpback whales use stars for navigation and migration. It provides three main reasons to back up the fact. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt about this hypothesis and does not validate the reasons and information by mentioning three persuasive reasons which contradict them in this framework.
First off, the passage asserts that humpback whales are so intelligent and using stars for navigating by. Conversely, the professor refutes the point by underlining the fact that there is no connection between the intelligence and using stars for navigation because some birds with average intelligence like ducks use stars for navigation, too. So, the connection between navigation by stars and the brainpower of whales is questionable.
Furthermore, the reading states migration of whale in straight lines by following of star's positions. On the other hand, the lecturer says that this point is not to be taken seriously. He mentions that whales use their biomagnetic sense for finding their ways. This sense oriented them by using the earth magnetic field.
Finally, the author holds the view that by spy-hopping, the whales look at the stars for providing information to navigate by. On Contrary, the professor mentions that this reason is highly questionable by providing the fact that other animals, also, use this behavior. For instance, sharks use this behavior for hunting but they do not migrate and do not need this behavior for finding their way. Besides, whales do this behavior during the day which stars are not visible.
