The reading provides three reason for the application of great houses of the Chaco Canyon settlements. However, the lecturer finds all the idea dubious and presents some points to refute them all.
First, the author claims that these structures could have been utilized as a residential center. Conversely, the lecturer cast doubt on this idea by stating that although the outside of these structures could been consider as a place for housing people, the inside of the buildings do not support this point, because there are a few fire place inside these structures. For instance, one of these structures has a capacity for more than 100 family, but, there are just then fireplace inside it, so, it could have not been used as residential center.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that these houses could be used for storing different kinds of foods such as maize grain. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that if these structures were utilized as a place for storing maze grain, the scientists should have found maize grains or at least maze container in their excavation, but they did not find anything like that. Therefore, it is fallacious the conclusion that these houses were utilized as a place for storing foods.
Finally, the reading asserts that the original people might use these houses for their ceremonies because scientists found huge number of broken pots in one of these places. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that they found other materials such the construction left overs in these houses. So, these pots could belong to construction workers who built these houses.
