The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about the possibility of traveling to Mars. The reading passage claims that there are several problems in this way which really did not exist for people who traveled to the Moon. On the other hand, the lecturer not only casts doubt on every single point raised by the author of the reading passage through citing three different counter-arguments but also believes that there are three solutions for the mentioned problems as well.
To begin with, the author of the reading passage establishes that the first issue to this fact that a round-trip to the Mars and back takes approximately 2 years which is actually too long compared to the trips to the Moon. Under such a circumstance, astronauts are able to provide sufficient water, oxygen, and food for their trip. Conversely, the lecturer rebuts this idea, stating that they can use the hydroponic method in order to grow plants in water rather than soil. Therefore, they can easily provide their food in this manner. Also, they enable to recycle wastewater and provide their drink water. Moreover, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen which is really helpful for the astronauts to breath.
Furthermore, the reading passage brings this notion that the astronauts' mission on Mars will be under a zero-gravity condition which may have several negative influences on their bodies. The lecturer supports a mutually exclusive view compared to that of the reading passage and points out that they do not have any problem with this circumstance because they had experienced it before several times. In such a situation, they use several techniques and take vitamins to solve problems regarding muscle mass and bone density.
Eventually, the reading passage goes on to mention that on this mission, astronauts are actually subjected to hazardous levels of space radiation. Notwithstanding, the professor specifies that this concept is not totally dangerous because they can readily keep themselves safe from space radiations by providing a shielding area which is not really massive and does not add much weight to the ship. They can use this area when they really need it.
