TPO 52- Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons
The reading and lecture are both about asteroids as best colonization option. The author of the reading believes that people living on asteroids are possible due to three reasons that are proposed. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims in the article and refutes all the theories presented. She says that the ideas are not practical and has serious downside.
First of all, the author points out that asteroids has low gravitational force. It is mentioned that landing on asteroids are not difficult task to do, so, it is much easier to take off again and need less fuel on its trip back to earth. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that low gravity on the asteroids pose health risks for the astronomers. Moreover, she argues that the effects are loss of muscle mass and bone density even on few months of travel. In addition, spending long periods of months on asteroid can lead to serious health problems.
Secondly, the author contends that there are abundant supply of metals and minerals in asteroid environment. The article notes that exploration to asteroids can provide with extensive source of gold and platinum which can be profitable. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that minerals that are abundant in asteroid are profitable idea but it is not the whole picture. Furthermore, she elaborates on this by mentioning that additional factor must be taken into consideration such as cost supply transportation which can reduce the profit for the metals. Also, there is no guarantee that the price would be the same because there will be high supply of these minerals and metals and the price can drastically decline.
Finally, the author states that asteroids are accessible to reach. The article establishes that the earth's orbit are closer to asteroids and so it is affordable to travel there and easier to travel back and forth. The lecture, on the other hand, posits that it is not easy to return to the earth because the earth orbit travel is unpredictable. She puts forth the idea that earth's orbit are close to asteroid when traveling to it, but it moves away as the spaceship will return back to earth.
