TPO 54. The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being repla

The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about the salinity of lake water which jeopardizes the natural habitats of fish and birds. Although the author mentions some solutions to ameliorate the lake's health, the lecturer finds them unrealistic and not practical to apply and provides three counter reasons to refute them all.

First of all, the text claims that taking advantages of evaporation and condensation of the water lake in order to remove the salt called "desalination" is a beneficial means of getting rid of salt. In other hand, the lecturer explains that desalination method would have some consequential outcomes. For instance, leaving behind some toxic materials, in addition to some salty substances after pumping water and evaporating it, would bring up serious health risks for human beings and other live species. Selenium, an element releasing to the air after desalination could cause breathe problems for people.

Furthermore, the text states that mixing ocean water containing lower content of salty materials with fresh water would reduce the amount of salinity. In contrast, the professor dismisses this idea, pointing out that while it would be a practical notion, the pipelines and channeling would be costly that government cannot provide a budget to cover such a huge expense. For example, connecting lake water to the ocean water requires about a hundred kilometers of highly expensive pipeline and pumping which is not as profitable as the author expects.

Eventually, the reading passage presents that imposing walls to separate distinct sectors of the lake to control the amount of salinity. However, according to the lecturer although the idea of construction of such separated walls would be advantages in short time, this is not a great idea in long run. The lecturer adds that in the condition of geological crisis such as earthquakes, these walls would be totally destroyed which in turn, causes mixing high salinity water with lower concentration salty water. Thus, it is not a profitable and gainful method to apply.
