In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses several purposed solutions for decreasing water lack salinity and avoiding from reducing birds population. While in the listening the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and believes that each of these solutions is not practical.
First of all, in the text, it is clearly mentioned that reducing water lack salinity using desalination facilities. However, the professor claims that maybe this method can reduce salinity, but it can also create some health risks for people. Besides salt, will be some other chemical substance deposited in this area such as selenium which is highly dangerous for the people healthy if it arrives in the air.
In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that adding ocean water could solve the problem. She says that transporting ocean water needs some construction facilities that it would be so expensive than the government can determine its financial resources.
Finally, in the text, it is stated that building some walls to dividing water into two parts, one small and a major part could solve the problem. The professor subscribes that it would not be a long-term solution and a practical one, because of the geology of this area. Lack present in the region with high risk of earthquake, so through earthquake walls would be destroyed and salt in the minor part would be dissolved again into the main part.
