When it comes to the effects of salvage logging after fires and storms, the reading passage believe that it is beneficial to local forest and economy with three reasons, which are contradicted by the following lecture.

First, the reading passage reasons that cleaning up is necessary that can make space for new tree to grow. However, the lecture points that it is harmful to the damages forest in long-term. Because the dead trees can decompose, which can riches the soil for the future generation trees. On the contrary, quickly removing them can lead lacks of nutrition and reduce the growth speed of new trees.

Furthermore, the reading passage argues that the decaying trees can provide the habitat for a harmful insects called spruce bark beetle, which can damage the healthy trees. The lecture, on the other hand, points that the insects isn't harmful to forest. They can live in the trees for many years without any damage. What is more, decaying wood can be more good for some insects as well as birds. And salvage logging will lead some long-term harm to the forest .

Lastly, the reading passage mentions that salvage logging is more economical, since they can still provide some wood which can be used, and the work of removing wood also creates more jobs. But the lecture holds a different view that economical effect is too small, and can't last long. Salvage wood can only be recovered by some vehicles, which are expensive use and maintain. Additionally, the jobs are only temporary, and outsiders with relative experience are more likely to be employed than local workers.
