In this sets of material, both the reading and the lecture discussed the population of birds in United States in the near future. The reading stated that we are going to see fewer birds in sky in following years and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecture repudiated what stated in the reading passage resting upon fallacious premises and provides three counterclaims proofing that the number of birds would not decline in coming years.
Firstly, the reading claimed that as human population expands, natural habitat of birds will disappear sooner or later, because the wetlands and other natural habitats will give their land to cities. The professor contradicted this point by acknowledging that after the development of urban areas; actually the habitat of birds has been improved. He pointed out that many residents will agree that the number of birds has an increased in recent years only some special species have been shrunk.
Secondly, the reading contended that agricultural activities which have been increased recently will have a negative impact on the number of birds. Notwithstanding, the lecture highlighted that although agricultural activities have been boomed recently, people will used less and less land every year for agricultural purposes, for the sake of new technologies we are able to grow productive crops, consequently there is no need to destroy wilderness any more.
lastly, the article argued that the widely usage of pesticides are another reason which will lead to kill birds. This seemed to be incorrect as explained in the lecture. The speaker articulated that, nowadays people are aware of the danger of chemical pesticides, as a result they tend to use less toxic poisons and more pests resistance crops that are not harmful for birds at all.
