Both the reading and lecturer are about Torreya taxifohna which is a kind of tree. The mentioned tree started to reduce and die out from 1950s. The reading provides three solutions for solving this problem and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all of arguments unconvincing also she says that these approaches will not have satisfactory results.
First of all, the author of reading declares that researchers should replant Torreya taxifohna in its original location. This native location is a particular and small microclimate in the northern Florida where Torreya taxifohna could be prosperous for many centuries. Since the aforementioned microclimate is cool and wet in compared with its around; hence, this tree may succeed. This point is challenged by the professor and she points out that microclimates are usually affected by their surrounding ambient and since global warming has occurred in all over the world; therefore, the wetlands and other large regions in the northern part of Florida have been dried up, so the microclimate will not be cool any more.
Secondly, the article contends that if scientists relocate Torreya taxifohna to another area such as a forest far away from northern Florida, this species would survive and reproduce. This transferring is called assisted migration; conversely, the lecturer expresses an experience with this approach to refute the mentioned idea by reading. Researchers could transfer another tree species which was called black locus tree to another area. Unfortunately, the mentioned species spread quickly and aggressively and killed a lot of other native species; as a result, one should not forget that assisted migration may have unprotected consequences.
Finally, the reading passage states that we should build a laboratory ambient for protecting of Torreya taxifohna. In this way, researches will also be able to do more researches on Torreya taxifohna and its deduction. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer and she poses that if Torreya taxifohna's population is not big enough, they will not be able to resist in front of diseases and meanwhile there is not enough space for maintaining large number of Torreya taxifohna.
