TPO28- Integrated Task

The reading and the lecture are both about the reality of Robert E. Peary's reaching to the North Pole. Whereas the author of the reading states that there are some strong reasons which prove his reaching, the lecturer suggests that these examples are not convincing. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, a National Geographic society committee investigates Peary's travel and asserts he had a real reach to the Pole. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She says that the committee was not objective enough and was just consisted of Peary's close friends. Furthermore, she mentions that their investigation only took two days, so it was not careful and trustworthy.
Secondly, the reading states that while recent Tom Avery's travel took place less than 37 days and on the other hand he used the same dogsled and number of dogs as Peary, Peary's arriving at the Pole in 37 days is true. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that these two travels are completely different because Tom had much less load compared to Peary, for example, he didn't carry the food and his food was just thrown by the airplane.
Finally, the reading claims that the shadows in the took photograph by Peary shows the Surf's position in the sun is exactly the same situation that is in the North Pole. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that the photographs don't prove anything. She thinks that the photographs are very old and the shadows in it are blurred and faded. Therefore, the results that are based on the shadows are not precise.
