The author of the reading passage holds that the story of the burning mirror used in the Roman-Greek navy war is just a myth, while the lecturer in the lecture expresses an opposite view.

To begin with, the author claims that the ancient Greek did not have the technological ability to build such a large parabolic copper mirror. However, the lecturer refutes that it could be consist of many small sheets of copper. An experiment has proved the possibility that we can make small individual parts of polished copper and then arrange them into parabolic shape. This method was practical to ancient Greek because the mathematicians knew the properties of parabolic curvature. Therefore, they had no problem in dissembling the mirror into small pieces, producing every single part and using them to form a large sheet.

Moreover, the author believes that it would have taken a long period of time to set the ships on fire through the burning mirror. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts that the experiment mentioned in the reading section makes a false presumption by assuming that the ships were made of pure wood. It is true that we need up to ten minutes to set a wooden ship on fire, but there were also other materials adopted in the ancient ships. Pitch, for example, was a kind of seal to create a waterproof layer for the boat, which can catch fire in a few seconds. Once the pitch is on fire, it spread to the whole ship quickly even it is on moving. So, the burning mirror is an effective weapon.

Finally, the author puts forward that the burning mirror has nothing similar to the flaming arrows, which is a common weapon in Greek. Instead, the lecturer retorts that it is that unfamiliarity that brings the winning to the Greeks. If the Roman were familiar with the attacking approach such as the flaming arrows, they would watch it carefully and get ready to defend. Yet the Sun’s rays reflected by the mirror are invisible, which can cause the fire so suddenly that enemy could not put it out. As a result, the burning mirror can be a better weapon than flaming arrows to deliver an unexpected attack.
