Both the essay and the speaker discuss whether a pattern of fine lines can serve as the evidence that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. The essay opposes the opinion that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. However, the speaker strongly argues the viewpoints from the essay.
Firstly, the essay indicates that the fine lines might be formed by the animal's body after the animal's death. However, the speaker indicates that other animals' body didn't decompose after their death. Moreover, their body even is well-preserved in volcanic ash. There was no way that the Sinosauropteryx are decomposed after their death. As a result, the first reason from the essay is not convincing.
Secondly, the essay interprets that the frills from dinosaurs might be wrongly recognized as the feathers. However, the lecture states that the chemical elements are different from frills and feathers. It is because that feathers usually contain proteins. This is to say that the second reason from the essay might go wrong.
Last but not least, the essay points out that there is no use for Sinosauropteryx to own feathers. Nevertheless, the lecture argues that feathers have other purposes aside from flight and keeping warm. For example, some birds display their colorful feathers. As a result, the feathers might also act as a display function for Sinosauropteryx.
To sum up, the lecture opposes the essay by arguing the decomposition of animals' body, proofing the exact chemical elements from feathers and explaining the other purpose for the feathers
