The reading states that the use of the TED which is a turtle excluder device that helps the turtle to escape from the net is uneffective and have been criticized for three reasons. However, the professor claims that the TED is a good way to protect the endangered turtle, and he refutes each of the reading reasons.
First, the article asserts that some shrimp fisher argues that the TED catch only rarely the turtle and it is affected negatively on the shrimp because it helps to escape the catching shrimp. The professor counters this point by saying that it is true that catching the turtle happens rarely. In fact, there are thousands of shrimp boat that accidentally pick the turtle every year, and these accidently catching turtle would be problematic. Besides, it influences the shrimp industry as a whole.
Second, the reading points out that shortening the time of the network under the water will be an effective alternative way. The professor contradicts this idea by telling that implementing a time limit will be a good idea only in theory. Indeed, it is impossible to enforce the strategy that limits the time because it is too complicated. They cannot monitor the time quickly.
Third, the reading explains that TED is not active for the large species of the endangered turtles. However, the professor posits that it is true that the TED is small for the large species, but they could design and modify a larger TED on a specific area without influence in its function. So, the small TED no longer be problematic.
