Both the reading and the listening materials talk about the navigation behavior of the humpback whales. The
reading passage proposes three plausible explanations to support that humpback whales are navigating by
the stars whereas the listening passage disputes the points made in the reading by putting forward three
counter-arguments.

Firstly, the reading passage suggests that humpback whales might be intelligent enough to use stars to
navigate by. On the other hand, the listening passage doubts the connection between intelligence and
navigation behavior. According to the lecturer, some birds like ducks are navigating by the stars but they only
have average level intelligence. Also such navigating ability is just their instinct therefore the connection
between intelligence and navigating ability is not obvious.
Secondly, the reading passage puts forward another point that humpback whales migrate using stars as their
external signs to maintain their direction. This point is against by lecturer in the listening materials. According
to the lecturer, the humpback whales do not use the stars as their external objects but migrate by the
magnetic field. The whales have special part that can sense the magnetic field and it is the magnetic field that
orients the whales.

Finally, the reading passage claims that the whales float straight up(which is called spy-hopping) to look at
stars. However, the lecturer again this explanation, criticizing that spy-hopping is not to look at the stars
because other animals like sharks do spy-hopping but they do it for hunting. Furthermore, the whales do spy-
hopping in the daytime when stars do not show up and it is impossible for them to migrate by stars in the
daytime.
