TPO52-task1

The reading states that colonization of asteroids can be a better choice than establishing colonies on Moon or Mars then explains three of advantages of this. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on the points made in the reading pointing out that asteroid colonization is not practical and each of the points has a downside.

First, considering the article, lower gravity is advantageous because it provides a safe landing and also easier to take off for a spacecraft. On the other hand, the professor in the lecture makes the point that this low gravity can cause serious health problem for colonies in the long-term settlement such as a decrease in muscle mass and bone density.

Second, the reading claims that mining valuable metals, such as gold and platinum, can make an asteroid colony profitable. On the contrary, the lecturer contradicts this notion and further explains that the whole cost of supporting the colony` and mining should be considered. Furthermore, when the amount of the supplies of these metals increases, the final price would decrease and this could not be a profitable business.

Third, the author in the reading puts forward the idea that since some of these asteroids are closer to Earth than Moon or Mars, they would be easier and more affordable to access them and come back from them. But the speaker refutes the idea and adds that the orbits of the asteroids are unusual and although they may be closer to Earth in a specific time and can be easier to get in, it may be much further in a later time when we want to get back from them, even than Mars.
