TPO55

The reading and listening materials have a debate on whether the device will be successful in fighting against certification. The writer believes that this device would not be successful. Nevertheless, the speaker argues that the device is helpful, and the reasons in the passage are not very convincing.

Firstly, the writer claims that the device costs so much money, some countries cannot afford them, but the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. According to her, the device can be reused so the cost is reasonable. She advances the theory by saying that once the young tree has grown up, they can remove the device and use it in another tree, it can be reused 20 times at least. So in this way, if we divide the cost of one device by the number of trees it can use, the cost is affordable.

In addition, the author states that this plan involves asking locals to help install, but they cannot get any benefits from this. However, the speaker admits those devices cannot be used for food, but she opposes the writer's point and takes the view that the locals can still have some possible rewards. Specifically, she indicates that for one thing the device can collect water, not only just for trees but also available for other plants, like vegetables, and the residents can use it as food to grow more food. For another, the branches of trees which grow larger in the device can be used as they can also grow some firewood, so using the device is also helpful for people's life.

Thirdly, the passage argues that the device's ability to collect and conserve water is limited. By contrast, in accordance with the speaker, the writer's claim does not hold the water because the grow-up trees without the device can survive. To explore further, she contends that the device helps trees grow long roots that can reach down the deep underground water sources. For example, in the Sahara Desert, there is 90 percent of trees were still thriving two years after the device was removed.
