In the United States employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day However many employees want to work a four day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employee

The reading and the lecture discuss about decreasing the five-day workweek to four. The author of the reading feels that there are three possible advantages in doing so. Meanwhile, the lecturer challenges the claim made in the article and believes that the explanations are faulty.
To begin with, the author claims that the four- day workweek policy would help in making more profit to the company. The article mentions that the employees are well rested and productive, as a result, they are less prone to making errors. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He insists that organization would have bear more cost eventually. Additionally, he says that the more workers that the office recruits to get the work done, greater and medical benefits should be given to all the employees no matter how many days a week they work.
Secondly, the author asserts that this plan would help in alleviating the unemployment problem. The article goes on to state that for every 4 employees, an additional one employee could be hired, for they would only be paid for 80% of their original salary. However, the lecturer argues this by mentioning that the hiring cost would be too high. Instead, it would be expecting the work to be done in four days instead of five, even if it means to work overtime, making the job more unpleasant.
Finally, the author posits that the workers can increase their quality of life. Moreover, the article suggests that they can enjoy their free time according to their interests. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that the idea possesses the threat to the kind of life they are living. He notes that the job stability wouldn’t be as intact and the chances of growth in the career would also be very low.
