Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

Both the reading passage and lecture discuss whether four days work week would be beneficial. The former engages that there are three benefits to individual employees, the company, and the overall nations as well, but the latter contradicts each of these points.

First of all, the author of the passage claims that the four-day workweek would be effective for the organization by increasing more rested hours for the employees, making less expensive mistakes during work hours, and requiring less payment. However, the lecture contends that if the company shortens their workweeks, then additional workers would be required for performing the rest of the work and might increase the cost. Extra space, extra computer, and training should be required which leads the company to incur a high amount of cost.

Secondly, the text asserts that the nations would be beneficial through increasing more workforce in the company, as reducing workweek requires more employees for performing additional tasks. In contrast, the listening counters that there might not be a possibility of creating new additional jobs because the company would force the existing workers for doing extra workers. For example, employees might have to do the same work as five days work week which makes the tasks unpleasant towards them.

In third, the reading passage mentions that the four-day workweek gives the employee an opportunity to spend more time with family members and personal activities as they have much available time. On the other hand, the lecture contradicts that it would not be helpful for individual workers because less payroll decreases their lifestyle standards. In addition, less working hours reduce their job ability, promotional opportunities, and in case of economic downtown, they would be the first position to lose jobs. The organization never considers fewer hours workers to promote their managerial positions.
