Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

The reading passage introduces a policy about changing the working days into four days a week, which previously used to be five days a week. The author states that such change will bring overall positive development in the economy of the country, the company and their employees. However, the lecturer in the audio disagrees. He says that such policy change would neither encourage any economic development, nor provide any additional profit in the company or any benefit to their employees.

First, the author in the reading passage says that working four days a week will result in increment of profit in the company, since lesser working days will improve the productivity as employees will be well-rested and make less error. But, the author does not agree with this as he believes that more cost will be incurred due to hiring of more number of workers, resulting in more training and higher medical costs. He also states that office expenses will increase drastically as there will be requirement of more office space and computers as well.

Secondly, the reading passage also mentions a boost in the country's economy due to higher employment rate. However, the lecturer in the audio contradicts this by saying that instead of hiring more employees, the company will expect the current employees to deliver the required outcome at lesser time in order to reduce the company cost. Hence, this lower working days may not guarantee more hiring in the company, which will not contribute significantly in solving the problem of unemployment. Similarly, the lecturer also disagrees with the author about benefiting the employees through this change in policy. He believes that lesser working hours might result in job instability among the employees. The employees might suffer from shortage of time to hand-in their completed task affecting their performance. This might potentially jeopardize their career as well as chances of promotion.

Hence, you can clearly see that the author and the lecturer hold quite a different view about this change in the number of working days per week.
