Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.

The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.

For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.

Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

The reading suggests that modifying the five days work to four days will eventually be beneficial to both the employees and the company for several reasons. However, the lecturer clearly denies the argument stating that it will not be as effectual as the passage suggests.

First of all, the passage states that four days work week will result in a profitable change as the workers will be more alert and rested, causing them to be prone to fewer errors than before, alongside with enabling the company to hire more employees as the existing ones will be willing to work at 80 percent of the normal rate. Nevertheless, the lecturer counters this argument by saying that recruiting additional workers will thereby engender more costs for the company since those new recruits will need additional training which will reduce the profit margin. Most importantly, the medical allowances per employee will certainly increase as it is same for each regardless of having employees working four days or five days per week.

Moreover, the passage states that this four weekdays policy will help reduce the unemployment rate in overall because to complete the pending work, the company will recruit new faces. But the lecturer refutes this argument by saying that, the alternative case can also happen. As the company will cut short the working days, they will indeed coerce the workers to do overtime because then expectation from the employees will be skyrocketed. Consequently, number of additional jobs will reduce instead whereas those existing jobs will feel more mundane and perfunctory.

Last but not the least, the reading tries to improvise that this four day working period per week will be accepted by those workers because they will also get more refreshing time for themselves; ramifications will act as a benefactor for the individuals as well since they will have more leisure to spend quality time with family. The lecturer, notwithstanding the statement's opinion, refutes it clearly by opining that it will rather hamper their career growth since they will not be focusing on their profession. Perhaps even, the company authorities will prefer those employees working five workdays a week over those working four days. Additionally, by following as the reading says, their will be consequence of economic downtown. Therefore it will impede the proliferation and career and may even threaten employee's career into peril.
