For which purposes buildings in Chaco Canyon were used?
Chaco Canyon in New Mexico has a lot of buildings, which are 3 or 4 stories high. But no one knows exactly for which purposes they were used; there are 3 different theories. In the reading part, it is stated that these hypothesizes suggest that they were used for residential, storing, or ceremonial purposes. On the other hand, the listening part casts doubt on these ideas.
Firstly, the reading part suggests that they could have been used for living by hundreds of people each. They hold this claim due to the fact that they are similar to “apartment building” at Taos, New Mexico. The listening part, however, indicates that there are different factors which undermine this claim. For example, there was not enough fireplaces and rooms for hundreds of people.
The second point I want to mention is the storing purpose. The reading part mentions that these people used a crop called grain maze which can be stored for longer periods, which creates need for huge storages. These buildings would be suitable for this. In contrast, listening parts says that archeologists did not found any grain maze or storage remnants.
The final point is ceremonial purposes. According to the reading part, this theory suggests that these buildings could be ceremonial centers, because of a mound with broken pots. The listening part casts doubt on this idea, by mentioning that there are also different materials like sand, stone, and construction equipment which could be a regular trash.
