The reading and the lecture are both about a painting and who is it's possible creator could be? The author of the reading states that the painting is more likely drawn by an American painter called Whistler. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that the painting is not Whistler's art.
To begin with, the author argues that the painting was first exhibited by one of the Whistler’s closest friends after his death. It is mentioned in the article that the exhibitor has later attributed this painting to Whistler. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says, the exhibitor was not a close friend to Whistler. Additionally, he says that the exhibition contains a lot of paintings from other painters too which shows that the attribution of that painting to Whistler is not true.
Secondly, the author suggests that the painting style is similar to the style of Whistler’s most renowned paintings. In the article,it is said that the woman is the painting is similar to the woman in Whistler’s most famous “Symphony in White” art and also the usage of grey and black dots resembles the style of Whistler art. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that there are a lot of other painters who used to paint with the similar style as Whisler. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the woman in “Symphony in the White” and the usage of monochromatic black, grey colours were the most popular things back then.
Finally, the author posits that though there’s no signature of Whistler but the painting had a small butterfly which was used to present in almost all Whistler’s paintings. Moreover, in the article, it is stated that this butterfly is the proof that it is a Whistler’s art. In contrast, the lecturer position is that the butterfly was of different shape, colour and in different postion than what used to be Whistler’s painting. He notes that the butterfly was not present at the time of painting but was added later in an attempt to forgery Whistler’s art.
In conclusion, the reading and the lecturer have contrasting views about the painting’s origin.
