woman in a white dress belongs to James McNeill Whistler may be written by another painter

Essay topics:

woman in a white dress belongs to James McNeill Whistler. may be written by another painter

The reading passage and the lecture talk about the James McNeill Whistler painting “Symphony in White”. J. M. Whistler is one of the best known and most famous American Painter. Based on this, the author in the reading passage says that there are many evidences which support the fact that the painting was made by Mr. Whistler. The lecturer opposes the author’s argument. He states that the evidences provided are not strong enough to confirm that painting was counterfeited.

To begin with, the author mentions that the painting was exhibited by Whistler’s friend after three year of painter death. This confirms that the painting was made by the same person. However, the lecturer denies the fact. He says, according to the record, exhibition was not only organized for Mr. Whistler painting, there was other painting as well. Further he adds that it may be possible the painter’s friend owns this painting and present it in the exhibition.

Moreover, the author argues that the painting style matches with the style of the painter. It’s painted in a monochromatic way as Mrs Whistler used in this most famous painting. The lecture refutes the fact by saying that monochromatic painting of White and Gray arrangement was already famous among the artist in that era. Many other painters use to paint with the same colours. In addition, the butterfly, which is considered as signature for the authority of Mr. Whistler's painting, is incorrect because the painter used to draw a butterfly in the upper right corner while in the Symphony in white is drawn in the right lower corner.

Lastly, the author states painting of Lady is popular model and many other painters use to draw her picture in the same white dress. Thus, we cannot say that this painting is the real one
