The reading and the lecture are both about the application of smart cars. In regards to the passage, the writer feels that there are three possible explantaions for the safer, less expensive and quicker driving after the implementation of smart cars. The professor in the lecture, however, challenges the claim made by the author. He states that the introduction of smart cars not necessarily satisfies all of the merits as stated in the passage, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with the claims made in the reading text.

To begin with, the author of the passage states that introduction of advanced sensors minimizes the car accidents. Some professionals in this field stand in the firm opposition to that claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states that smart cars are more likely to increse the road accidents. Furthermore, he goes on to this by saying that the computerized system makes cars to be parked compactly, hence increasing the chances of collision between them.

One group of scholors, represented by author, feel that traffic problems will decrease to the minimum once the smart cars are used as they will be easy to manage. Of course, though, not all experts feels in the same way. Again, the speaker debunks this claim made by writer by positing that as the driving will get easier, more people will get attracted to driving, hence more traffic congestion on the road.

Finally, the writer wraps up his statement by saying that driving will less expensive after using smart cars as they use direct routes to travel using GPS. Not surprisingly, the professor takes issue with this claim by contending that the cost of GPS and other sensors surpasses the profit made by fuel saving using direct route by smarr cars. Moreover, he notes that the smart cars will require more repairing and maintanance than mechanical cars, ultimately increasing the cost of driving.

To recapitulate, the writer and the speaker holds contrasting opinion about the application of smart cars. It is clear to see that they will have trouble finding common ground in this issue.
