Essay topics:

The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of SNorth America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot be stopped and that it poses a serious threat to freshwater fish populations in all of North America.

First, the history of the zebra mussel's spread suggests that the invasion might be unstoppable. It is a prime example of an invasion made possible by human transportation. From the zebra mussels original habitats in Eastern Europe, ships helped spread it out along new canals built to connect Europe’s waterways. The mussel can attach itself to a ship’ s bottom or can survive in the water - called "ballast water” - that the ship needs to take on to properly balance its cargo. By the early nineteenth century, the mussel had spread to the whole of Europe. It was later carried to the east coast of North America in the ballast water of ships traveling from Europe. The way ships have spread the zebra mussel in the past strongly suggests that the species will soon colonize all of North America.

Moreover, once zebra mussels are carried to a new habitat, they can dominate it. They are a hardy species that does well under a variety of conditions, and they have a high rate of reproduction. Most important, however, zebra mussels often have no predators in their new habitats, and species without natural predators are likely to dominate their habitats.

Finally, zebra mussels are likely to cause a decline in the overall fish population in habitats where they become dominant. The mussels are plankton eaters, which means that they compete for food with many freshwater fish species.

Recently there has been a debate on zebra mussel, a shell fish indigeneous to Europe that has spread to some part of North America.More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth three reasons on how the intrusion can never be put to an end.In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writers claim. In fact, he believes, and addresses in detail, three effective means by which the rapid spread of the Zebra mussel can be controlled.

First and foremost, the author of the reading states that zebra mussel adheres ballast water and as a result, it will maintain its balance to cargo. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening for example, the professor states that Zebra mussel carries ballast water to europe and in turn deposit it to North America.Besides, salt water totally eliminates zebra mussel.

One group of scholars, represented by the writer, thinks that movement of zebra mussels to a new dwelling place will automatically make them have a greater influence.Of course, though, not all experts in the field believe this is accurate.Again, the speaker addresses this point when he states that zebra mussel do not come across predators at first, but as a matter of fact, they have natural enemies because aquatic birds eat a lot of them.

Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that zebra mussels are prone to reducing the overall fish population. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with the claim by contending that the total population would be reduced, but these clearly have both setbacks and benefits on fish planting. To be specific, there are nutrients are the bottom so fish at the bottom are more likely to generate numerous nutrients.

To sum up, both the author and writer hold conflicting views on the spread of zebra mussel. It is clear that they will have trouble finding common grounds.
