Zoos are sometimes seen as necessary but not poor alternatives to a natural environment. Discuss some of the arguments for and/or against keeping animals in zoos.
The article states that zoos are essential to modern life and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that zoos don’t benefit animals and society and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading states that animals are treated well in zoos. The professor refutes this point by stating that it is not true and the reality is not so pretty. He provides an example of a safety issue found in one zoo. Red pandas were found dead in their cages because they had been exposed to rat poison. At the moment of the accident no zoo keepers could be found, showing the lack of care from the zoo’s administrators.
Second, the article claims that zoos are nowadays seen as a form of education. However, the professor contends that zoos are still used as a form of entertainment. He explains that animals are being used only to attract visitors, showing to guests that there in no problem to use wild animal for their own purposes. Also, he states that visitors can’t truly see the animals in theirs natural habitat. The zoos are able to create just artificial environments that are often inconsistent to the real ones.
Third, the reading avers that zoos help to protect and preserve endangered species. Conversely, the lecture opposes this point by saying that this assumption could be a problem. He explains that in general zoos have a poor success in protecting this animals. He also states that zoos have just a small number of endangered species when compared with the total amount of animals that they have, in that way, this species tend to interbreed each other. In other words, the animals can mate just with their own relatives, increasing the number os birth defects. Those problems show that there is no advantages to preserve this species in zoos when compared with their native habitat.
