Can a child's painting be considered a work of art?
Creation and imagination have no boundaries. We can create anything from our own imagination, from little things such as a lovely house made of matchsticks and cottons, to an enormous humble fresco painted on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. That raises up a question: “Can a child’s painting be considered a work of art?”
When we speak of works of art, we usually think about art masterpieces throughout the history, such as Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci,... But those marvelous artworks were done by talented and incredible artists in history, so how can a young, amateur child who can not even draw a human properly, create something that can be looked upon as an art masterpiece? There are numerous factors needed to be taken into account.
To begin with, a work of art needs to be come from the artist’s original ideas or inspirations, and hidden beneath the picture is layers of meanings and emotion thrills. As for children, they always express their true feelings throughout their drawings due to their honest and naïve characteristics; hence, their pictures are mostly direct and original. A four-year-old boy’s drawing of a lovely house and three stick figures inside can be appealed more to his peers and adults rather than a well-drawn picture with complicated meanings. We can automatically understand from the drawing is that the boy is drawing his loving family, living in their “home, sweet home.” That simple drawing can be a masterpiece, the boy loves his family, he wants together the three of them live under the same roof as in the picture. Every art piece can be a work of art, even a child’s scribbles, as long as we create them with our heart and soul put into the pictures.
However, some of the world’s magnificent artworks look exactly like a toddler’s doodles, so how can those ones are reserved in the museums, while the children’s paintings are not? Take Mark Rothko’s abstract paintings as examples, most of them look like nothing but watercolors. No content, no scenery, no humans, just some random colors on the paintings and that is considered as “works of art.” “What? My daughter can draw better than this!”, some people may think. However, when we look those paintings in the professionals’ perspective, those paintings are called “Abstract Expressionism” with the main subject is colors. Rothko only uses colors to express the hidden meanings of the paintings. After all, art is not all about how one can draw well or not, but rather the message the artist tries to convey in his paintings matters more.
All in all, a painting that we draw from our imagination and ideas is always unique and gorgeous, even if it is done by a child.A “poorly-drawn” and simple picture of a stick figure’s family can have the same value as a Renaissance painting, because besides the paints, color mixes and sketches, what lies beneath the canvas is more precious.
