One hundred years of solitude

One hundred years of solitude

After finishing “Father Goriot”, I searched for a new book which was good enough to tempt me. Surfing net, asking my friends and family members, I found “100 years of solitude” which was written by Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez who was awarded in 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature. This novel published in 1967, and has been translated into 37 languages and sold more than 30 million copies. Since my own book has more than 500 pages, I’m afraid of being passive, but it turned out be a genuinely fantastic work.

To me the Buendia family. Founder of the Macondo city and patriarch of the Buendia family is Jose Arcadio Buendia who became insane for science and alchemy, and who is actually really lonesome and pitiful person. Because no one understands him and after becoming psychotic, he had tied to an oak tree until his death. After that, his son colonel Aureliano Buendia was the luckiest human being in the world. Colonel’s premonition was always right and he even predicted his own father’s death. Another highlighting character is 7th generation’s Aureliano who was born with a pig’s tail. Unfortunately, the infant were devoured by ants.

Background. The story takes place from 19th to 20th century. Actually I don’t know much about Columbia’s history ,yet, the book describes it perfectly even though it is not accurately written. For instance, election between the Conservative and liberal parties grew into civil war caused amount of blood and suffering. After long battle hardships, in the end the Conservative party won. Furthermore, workers of banana plantation were massacred by the Columbian army which was sent by the government. They left no evidence and tossed the corpses into the sea \based on real incident\. The novel itself almost script of the Maconda city. From the town’s inception to renaissance then it’s perish.

Interesting events. The most mind-blowing act was undoubtedly gypsy Melquiades’ the Buendias’ prophesy which tells about downfall of the Maconda and even more. Certainly, I predicted that ending but not in that way. Other an extraordinary fact was three years’ rain and ten years’ drought which happened at the Maconda city. The sole reason of establishing the Maconda city was for it’s own catastrophe. And I have to admit that the time is a magic that repeats itself.

Conclusion. There is no way that this novel is most recognized in the whole world. To me, writing style has always same rhythm that continuous throughout the story. The deaths, the acts, the accidents and everything were right on the time which never runs fast or slow. However, there were some difficulties to me for reading. The family members always gave same names to their children -almost every characters have the same names. Also the time runs as liner progression but backs up each characters and events so it is causes little confusion. After reading this book my first thought was that the Buendias- expect for Aureliano Segundo, 6th generation’s Aurliano and Amaranta Ursula- did not love others they only care themselves and all of them have self-inflicted personality. Even though I have the book which is white, soft covered and small sized, I prefer to buy very first edition because the book is hard covered and nice illustrated cover.
