Essay topics:

cheatgrass is an invasive species of grass that is causing problems in North American fields.

Both the reading and the talk are about cheatgrass, a kind of plant that because of some characteristics make several problems for the environment. Having considered this, the author provides three solutions that may address the problems. The lecturer, on the other hand, categorically denies all the suggestions mentioned in the passage, citing that they are not practical and explains why.

First, the author states that since grazer animals like Cattle and other live stocks eat cheatgrass, they can release such animals in the fields that cheatgrass has been prevalent and in this way get rid of this plant. The lecturer, however, rebuts this notion and says that although grazers eat cheatgrass in the fields, it is not a preference for them. Grazers first eat other native species and then use cheatgrass. In this way, this strategy has the opposite effect because will result to have fewer native species and more cheatgrass in a given field.

Second, it is mentioned in the passage that burning the fields where cheatgrass is dominated, can make more space for other species because cheatgrass is more flammable than other species in the field. The speaker refutes this idea and claims that cheatgrass produces so many seeds which are below the surface of the soil. Therefore, during fire seeds stay intact and will not be burned. These seeds germinate and grow up over few years and spread in the field. In this situation, cheatgrass will be dominant again.

Finally, the author points out that according to the evidence observed in North America, cheatgrass is vulnerable to a kind of fungus, they can use this fungus to eliminate the cheatgrass efficiently. The lecturer, on the contrary, states that cheatgrass and the fungus have been living together for thousands of years. Hence, cheatgrass is rather resistant to the fungus. Moreover, fungus only can damage and diminish the weak unhealthy cheatgrass. Nevertheless, it does not have any adverse effect on strong healthy cheatgrass.
