Essay topics:

Governments should focus on solving the immediate problems of today rather than on trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

While the actual behavior of a government depends on the political system of the particular state, including the presidency term, whether or not the system is one of democracy or dictatorship, etc., the goal of a government should rightly be the wellbeing of the citizens of the country. The prompt recommends that governments should concentrate on solving the current problems before considering the long-term ones. I mostly disagree with this statement, and will elaborate from three angles.

First, while advocating for policies that improve the immediate well-being of the citizens may well promise a successful political campaign, it should NOT be the ONLY thing a government focuses on when it is serving the term. In countries where a democratic political system exists, voters choose their preferred political leader based on their own biases. It is human nature to tend to focus on current or short-term issues, the ones that have already caused obvious pain points, and put off the long-term issues, the ones that may cause great pain but not until in the future. A leader should know better than just quenching the thirst of his people. He or She should possess the vision for the future, plan strategically and implement policies that could ensure the sustainable prosperity of the country, as well as anticipate dangers that may be on the horizon, and carry out preemptive actions to prevent them.

Secondly, even if we take a thousand steps back and agree that the government should mainly spend its resources on solving the immediate problems, there would be disparity between what “immediate problems” are from the perspectives of an upper-middle-class and of the lower class. The former may worry about their children’s education or want extra paid leaves, while the latter struggles to afford the next meal and is most concerned with survival. Without siding with any particular sector of the population, it is almost impossible for the government to determine which problems should be assigned with higher urgency and thus higher priority. The scale of the problem and the social value in solving the problem should be evaluated as well as the level of immediacy.

With the above being said, I think a government that does focus on SOLVING problems, whatever types of problems they might be, already puts itself in the category above the other governments that are run through dictatorships and cater to their own profit. But this does not put the problems of today in comparison with the problems of tomorrow. One still cannot say the problems of the future are of less value than the problems of today.

In summary, it is hard to agree on what the “immediate problems” are to start with, let alone it is harder to argue that the problems of the future should wait after the problems of today are solved. Although we appreciate a government that solves problems in general, we would not want to go so far to suggest that the government should focus on solving the problems of today rather than trying to solve the problems of the future.
