Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic regions. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of the year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the purported decline in deer populations is the result of the deer's being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
The statement presents how is the cycle of the Canadian arctic deer during the annual seasons. Their main source of food are plants which need some high temperature to germinate and, in the other hand, the deers also need lower temperatures in order to move<span class="hiddenSpellError" pre="to "></span> from island to island using the ocean’s frozen parts. Meanwhile, local hunters reported that the population of arctic deers are decreasing and these reports coincide with recent global warming trends indicating that the polar ice cap is melting. Although this seems logical, there are lack of important information to relate the declining of the deer’s population to the global warming event.
In the first place, the exert indicates that the declining in the number of deers are reported by local hunters. Therefore, it is possible to verify that this observation is purely visual and there is not any scientific research to indicate empirical numbers of this decrease. Another important fact is that these locals are not able to inform if the animals are really dying from starvation or if they are just migrating to other areas due to the temperature increase or other unknown reasons.
Moreover, to connect the fact that these hypothetical decrease is connected with recent global warming only because they are observed at the same time is very frivolous. The global warming, as its name shows, an event on a global scale. The text also don’t idicates any concrete data concerning the melt of ice in Canadian’s islands. Also, recent studies indicates that this event is not totally proved, so it cannot be taken as a true event that is happening equally all over the world.
Lastly, the statement also doesn’t shows information about other animals in the area. It is known that even with the difficult winter in Canada’s arctic regions, there are a rich wildlife, like polar bear, fox, musk, seals and many others. So, only looking for a specific animal is not sufficient to give good conclusions.
In summary, the argument presented by the text have just a superficial approach of the problem. There is no scientifical evidence just reports by the locals focused in theirs everyday observations. Thus, the reason applied to population’s decline is based only in a coincidence of events, which there is not sufficient data of the temperature or rate of melting in Canada’s islands. Finally, there has not been evaluated the deer’s migration to another area or the behavior of other animals. Showing that the argument needs a lot of additional information in order to be plausible.
