Essay topics:

The best way for a society to prepare its young people for leadership in government, industry or other fields is by instilling in them a sense of cooperation, not competition.

There is a saying that "Leaders are born, not made". Besides this statement, there is alot of scholarship on leadership such that it (leadership) is studied at higher institutions. This implies that preparation for leadership is important and I mostly agree that the optimal means to prepare the youth for leadership is to build in them the ability to cooperate, not compete. I make this proposition based on two reasons although I concede that there could be situations where a sense of competition is imperative.

Firstly, leadership inherently involves working with other people. "No man is island" especially a leader. A leader needs to be willing to learn from others, share ideas and experiences as well as take corrections. Hence, the ability to cooperate (i.e. work with others) with others becomes necessary because one who is unwillingly to cooperate would be unlikely to be a good leader. An example is an authoritarian person who assumes leadership positions and make decisions by his/herself and refuses to listen to counsel or cooperate with other well meaning persons/leaders. The ultimate result would be negative consequences for the establishment, institution or society. Hence, imbibing a sense of cooperation in young people is a better means of getting them ready to lead.

Secondly, leadership is a collective responsibility. There is no leader if there are no followers. Thus, apart from the need for one to have a the trait of cooperation with other leaders, cooperation is also required for proper leader-follower relationship. To illustrate, a leader who does not have the ability to cooperate will be unlikely to be able to listen to his/her followers and hence would most likely not be a good leader. Cooperation builds a sense of harmony and trust which enables the achievement of the general good whereas competition could engender rivalry and discontent.

Nevertheless, instilling the trait of competition over cooperation maybe necesssary in cases where it is evident that the sense of competitiveness may help improve performance. In particular situations where the ability to push and acheive set targets is lacking in a specific person(s) maybe due to low morale and lack of zeal, zest or passion, then forging an atmosphere of competion rather than coopertaion maybe be preferable.

In conclusion, leadership is an important skill that needs to be developed and this cannot be over-emphasized. Trait such as cooperation that can help young people become leaders should be imbibed in them early.
