This illustrates the consumption on five main items in four different countries in 2009

It is clear that the largest proportion of consumer spending in all countries, except for Japan, went on housing. On the other hand, the health care and clothing categories provided the lowest figure in 2009

As can be seen from the chart, the shares of expenditures of the United States on housing were the highest at 26%, following by the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada, at 24%, 22% and 21%, respectively. Meanwhile, the figure for Japan on food was slight higher than others, at 23%, compared with 20%, 15% and 14% for the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, respectively. Transportation showed the highest consumption rate for Canada, at 20% in the comparison with the United State, the United Kingdom and Japan, at 17%, 15% and 10%, respectively.

In contrast, the number of expenditures on health care and clothing in four countries were far lower than other categories. In term of health care, while the United Kingdom’s expenditure was the lowest, at only 2%, the figure for the United States was 7%, and for Canada and Japan was equal, with 4% per each country. There was the same proportion of consumption on clothing for four countries, at around 5% for each nation.
