The chart and table below give information about population figures in Japan.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The presented chart illustrates the past, present, and future trends of Japan's population in millions. A table has also been provided which depicts the population of people aged 65 years or above in percentages and millions as well.

Overall, the population of Japan had shown a gradual increase in the past and is expected to get reduced in the future. Whereas, the population of people 65 years and above had shown a consistent rise in the past and same is expected for the future.

Talking about details, population growth in the past had shown a gradual increase in numbers from the year 1950 till 1995, rising from 84.1 up to 125.5 million respectively. From the year 1995, the population remained steady to some extent, till the year 2010, accounting for 127.1 million people. Now it is predicted that the population in Japan will decrease in the future. In 2015 population will be reduced to 125.4 million, as continuing this predicted trend, population will be reduced to 110 and 89.9 in the year 2035 and 2055 respectively.

The population of people (65 years or above) was rising in the past. In 1950, about 4.1 million people are either 65 years or above, thus making 4.9% of all. Whereas, in 2005, this category of the population has grown to 25.7 million, around 20% of the whole population of Japan. This population rise is expected to escalate in the future as well. Increasing to about 37.2 and 36.5 in the year 2035 and 2055 respectively, and an even higher proportion of population 34.0% and 41.0% of all.
