The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

The following bar graph gives information about the proportion of English and Wales families living in two types of accommodation during the period from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it is clear that most people rented house in 1918 and therefore, the number of inhabitants having their own accommodation in that year was the lowest percentage of all. Besides, it is noticeable that in 1971, we can see the similarity in both figures of two types.
A closer look at the chart reveals that the highest percentage was about 78% belonged to rented accommodation in 1918 while at that time, the number of owned ones began with just above 20%. Following that, in 1939, the figure of rented house slightly dropped by about 9% and so that the other one increased by the same percentage. After remaining stable in 1953, both figures continued following opposing trends and then reached the same proportion in 1971: each accounted for half of the total percentage.
After that point, number of people owned houses gradually rose in the next 3 period, which reached 60%, 68% and 69% respectively before a decrease in the last year. In contrast, rented accommodation experienced a steady drop during 3 decades after 1971 and finally went up to about 36% in the end of the research.
