The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The schematic illustrates the theory of operation of Geothermal plants in general. The main principle is converting thermal energy on earth into electrical power through heating water. The process depends mainly on the water as a heating transfer element. Firstly, cold water is pumped down deep into the ground through pipes of 4.5 km vertical length. Then, the water reaches the injection well area, where the evaporating process starts in the Geothermal zone, which consists of rocks of high temperatures. Next, the vapor is pumped up from the production well through pipes of the same length as the one used with injection well. When the vapor reaches the condenser, it is pressurized and redirected at the turbine acting as its prime mover. This steam has not only high pressure but also very high temperature. Thus, thermal energy is converted to mechanical energy. The turbine’s shaft is the same shaft of the electrical generator, that -in turn- transforms mechanical energy into electricity. Finally, the output electrical power is connected to the grid via overhead transmission lines, that deliver electricity to consumers.
