Eating sweet foods produces acid in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. (High acid levels are measured by low pH values)

Describe the information below and discuss the implications for dental health.

The graph illustrates the acid level of 3 type of sweet food when consumed and kept in mouth. Sweet foods can cause tooth decay and from the graph, it is shown what happens to teeth as the duration of keeping the sweet food in mouth increases.

Fruit sugar, Cane sugar and Honey has a starting acid level (pH) of 7 at the moment of consumption. Fruit sugar has the highest drop in pH at the first 5 minute mark. The pH level goes to 3.5 which is well below the acid level at which tooth decay occurs. It slowly rises above risk levels after 30 minutes and at the 40th minute mark, it reaches the highest pH level.

Cane sugar also faces a drop in the pH level in the first 5 minutes but not as low as Fruit sugar. 5th minute acid level of Cane sugar is slightly above 4 and it goes above the risk level at the 20th minute mark. From there, it slowly goes to pH level 7 at 35 minutes and stays at the same level till 40 mins.

Honey has the lowest acid level drop after it is consumed in the first 5 minute. The acid level is at 5 at that time. From 5 to 10 minute, it shows no change in acid level but after 5 minutes, it increases steadily. It crosses the decay level at the 12-13th minute which is the fastest among the 3 food types. It rises to pH level 7 at the 25th minute which is also faster than the other 2 food types shown in the graph.

In conclusion, we can see that honey causes the most damage in the least amount of time to teeth, then fruit sugar and the healthier among these 3 is fruit sugar.
