The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.

The first pie chart illustrates energy consumption in an average house in Australia and the second shows the greenhouse gas released as a result of this energy usage.
Overall, while heating needs the greatest proportion of total energy used to operate, water heating releases the highest amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
Heating appliances, including water heating and heating, account for the majority of energy consumed (72%). These are followed by energy use from other appliances, at 15% to be precise. When combined, the percentage energy used by cooling and lighting is relatively equal to that for refrigeration.
In terms of emissions, water heating appliances are the major emitter, producing 32% of greenhouse gas. Other appliances contribute 28% to the gas emissions while heating devices and refrigeration almost produced the same amount of greenhouse gas, at 15% and 14% respectively. The minority of greenhouse gas emitted was from lighting and cooling.
