The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph compares the number of goods shipped using four modes of transport in the UK over the 28-year period.
It is noticeable that there was an upward trend in all modes of transportation. Road was by far the most chosen way of shipping goods over the period.
In the initial year, road was regarded as the main shipping way in the UK, allocated to carry 70 million tonnes of goods. Water and rail shared an approximate figure of 40 million tonnes of goods, which was almost 50% lower than the figure for road, whereas the quantities of goods conveyed via pipeline were just 10 million tonnes. In 1978, the amount of goods shipped via water rose dramatically, overtaking railway for the entire period.
From 1978 onwards, goods transported by road fluctuated before peaking at nearly 100 million tonnes in 2002, maintaining its dominant position in goods shipment. The same pattern was shown for railway, but its figure in the last year remained the same as in the beginning, while goods shipped via water continued its growth at 60 million tonnes, being the second commonly used modes of transport. Despite increasing gradually, the figure for pipeline was still unnoticeable, remaining its last position of all time.
