The diagram illustrates the changes in the prices of three main types of food in the USA during the 30-period.
Generally, it is clear to see the overall rising trend in these three categories of food, despite the fluctuation seen in the category of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The rise in three main groups of foods started in 1979, at an approximate number of 53. The index of fresh fruits and vegetables experienced some fluctuation during 1983 and 1985, before rising drastically 24 years later. At the end of the period, the price of fresh fruits and vegetables reached a peak of roughly 330, significantly higher than the consumer-price index.
In comparison to the first group mentioned, the change in price of the other two groups of foods was also witnessed as lower than the consumer-price index. In the group of sugar and sweet, there was a slight rise between 1981 and 1983, followed by a consistent increase before peaking at about 200 in 2009. Also, the group of carbonated drinks rose slowly over the period before reaching a peak of over 150 at the end of the period.
