Graphs showing population changes in urban and rural areas from 1950 till 2050.
The first line graph provides information about the population changes in urban and rural areas over a period of time extending from 1950 till 2050. The other graph shows the rise in migration to cities in three different continents over the same time period.
Overall, people seem to be flocking to large cities while the rural areas are seeing a decline their popularity as a result. Africa, North America and Asia all saw a growth in their urban population and this trend is expected to continue into the future.
In the 1950 about 2000 million people lived in rural settings which was more than twice the number that were settled in the large metropolitans. Since then we have observed a steady rise in the population of big cities and around 2010 it took over the number of people living outside of the cities. Today in 2021, around 4000 million people dwell in cities which is expected to further increase to above 6000 million by 2050 while population of rural areas is on a constant decline.
As for the urban population of specific continents, the North America had the most populous cities. The number of people living in cities there, in 1950, was more than double of the world average with over 60% living in urban areas. It’s expected to remain at the top even in 2050. We also observe a steady urbanization in Africa and Asia, at an almost equal rate, but eventually Asia is supposed to overtake Africa in 2050 with more than 60% of total citizens dwelling in cities there.
