The pie chart presents the main causes why farm land becomes degraded worldwide.

Globally, up to 65% of land degradation are from over-grazing and cutting down trees. 35% belongs to over-grazing and 30% for deforestation. In third place is over-cultivation with 28%. However, other reasons for land degradation are less concern as only 7% contributes to the issue.

The causes of land degradation varies in 3 different regions. In Europe, the main causes involved 9.8% deforestation and 7.7% over-cultivation. Europe contains the total of 23% land degraded, making it the highest among the three. Oceania takes second place although over-cultivation did not contribute to the issue. Out of 13%, 11.3% are from over-grazing the land. Lastly, North America contains only 5% of the total degraded land.

Overall, the main issues that contributed to land degradation are over-grazing, over-cultivation, and deforestation. Even when the overall causes worldwide are high in digits, the main causes are different in each region.
