The graph shows the energy consumption in the USA from 1980 to 2008, and projected until 2030.
Petrol and oil are the main fuel sources in the USA throughout the period. In 1980, the consumption of petrol and oil were 35 quadrillion (35q). Despite a fluctuation in the start, from 1995 it continues to grow steadily. By 2030, it is estimated that the number would rise to 48q.
The energy consumption of coal and natural gas are similar. Started off with 16q (coal) and 20q (natural gas), both types of fuel gradually increased over the period. However, in 2014 it is assumed that natural gas will remain stable at 25q until 2030. While coal is projected to grow gradually to 30q in the same year.
In 1980, energy from nuclear, solar/wind, and hydropower started at 4q. Nuclear and solar/wind have risen steadily by 3q and 2q respectively, with slight increase in 2025. However, the usage of hydropower fluctuated since 1980 to 2011. After the year 2011, it is foreseen that the number would remain at 4q until 2030.
Overall, the main source of energy would continue to be petrol and oil, followed by coal and natural gas. The remaining – nuclear, solar/wind, and hydropower would still be the unpopular choices.
